Overview

Tsunami Boats in Southern India - A week after the tsunami hit, TBN members were on a plane to assist one of TBN's partner organizations, The Bridge Foundation. The Bridge Foundation had been established more than 20 years ago, and was involved in the co-ordinating immediate relief to the affected areas. In addition to clean-up, programs were developed to:

Teach the women to form self-help groups where they would look out for each others' financial, social, and material needs, and in starting microenterprises.
Provide local fishermen with a share ownership in new fishing boats, instead of working for $1 per day for a monopoly owner controlling all the boats in the village.
Find temporary alternative employment for local farmers, allowing them to stay in their communities rather than travel to city slums.
